I love when hotel restaurants rock my proverbial socks off. Love it. Although more and more hotels are investing in good restaurants, when one really impresses me I want to shout it from the rooftops, sing it to the heavens. And my recent meal at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina Resort‘s Red Marlin in San Diego, California certainly fits that bill. It was awesome.
Say, just say, you’ve spent an exhausting day tooling around at SeaWorld. The kids are crabby, you’re on your last nerve and everyone is hungry. That’s no time to take a trip into the city. Nope, your only good choice is hotel eating. If you were staying at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina Resort, you could simply head back to your room, clean up a bit and then walk down to Red Marlin.
Red Marlin is both classy and casual, with firepits that can be both fun or sexy (depending on your company). You also have a fantastic view of the adjacent harbor. But this restaurant has more than just cool ambiance. The wine list and menu also impress.
This isn’t a place that gives you a thick book of wines. Instead, it focuses on a select group that best work with the menu. Good stuff, too–I was hard-pressed to pick my glass of La Crema Pinot Noir with all the other choices at my disposal. But it was a good pick. It was the perfect pairing to my osso buco. And that osso buco? Perfect. It fell off the bone with a hard look. Each bite offered a magical taste. It was delicious.
I proved too full to order dessert. But spying on nearby tables demonstrated I should save room next time around.
Sometimes hotel eating doesn’t have to be a bore. Sometimes it’s better than anything you could find in town. Red Marlin fits quite well in the latter category.
